on our last full day there, we went on my very first saltwater fishing trip. my companions assured me we’d be fishing in what amounted to a channel of water—you know—with land on either side. my companions were very wrong. i nearly stroked out when we passed the jetties and all i could see on one side of me was a line of water pulling itself taught over the horizon. i calmed down quickly once we started fishing because very shortly after dropping a line, i caught a 27” red drum and had to fight it into the boat. red drum is very close to murder when you spell it backwards… it ended up being the biggest fish of the day and the boys were a little put out, i think. chris was a gentleman, though, and continued baiting my hooks for me or handing me his rod when a mackerel bit through my line so i wouldn’t have to wait to have it repaired. i ended up catching 12 fish. chris was impressed.
